Myths About God’s Leading

When I thought about God’s leading, there used to be a subtle fear of ‘missing it’. As a university student, I’d spend hours praying that I wouldn’t miss out on God’s will. It was a consciousness I carried around. “God please”, I’d pray, “don’t let me miss your will. I do not want your permissive will, but your perfect will”

Over the years, people have come up with myths about God’s leading that aren’t quite true (that’s why they are called myths, right?). These myths have been fueled by human experiences such as praying without receiving answers or the thinking that one isn’t the kind of person God would consider speaking to, amongst others. The aim of this article is to destroy those myths because God does lead. In fact, He is known to have led unlikely (according to our myths) people.

The revelation of God’s love forms the foundation of every doctrine for us. He is a loving father who would go any length to talk to you and to lead you, regardless of who you are. Share on X

Peradventure, we have people here, who for whatever reasons, think they are not the kind of people God speaks to- maybe you have prayed several times and received zero direction, or you think you are a sinner, let it sink into your consciousness today – ‘LEADING SEEKS YOU’! What that mean is that God is more willing to talk to you.

The revelation of God’s love forms the foundation of every doctrine for us. He is a loving father who would go any length to talk to you and to lead you, regardless of who you are. Here are some reasons for this:

1. God is more willing to lead you than you are willing to be led, especially if you are a believer.

His leading is a benefit that flows from believing the Gospel (Romans 8:14). Even Cornelius, an unbeliever was led by God through a vision. (Acts 10:3).

God is more willing to lead you than you are willing to be led, especially if you are a believer. Share on X

2. God is more than able to communicate with you despite your shortcomings.

He will open the mouth of a donkey if need be (Numbers 22:28). In the scriptural reference, we see a leading, through working of miracles, for the sake of the Israelites of which Balaam, a non-Israelite benefited from.

God is more than able to communicate with you despite your shortcomings. Share on X

3. God spoke to sinners

Adam: After the fall of man, one would think that God would have no words for him; yet God still communicated with Adam. In fact, God told Adam and his wife how their deliverance from the nature of sin was going to unfold (Genesis 3:15).

Cain: This is an interesting case because Cain had just murdered someone who pleased the Lord and yet, he was still led and protected. (Genesis 4:6, 15).

Pharaoh: Another interesting case. This pagan king got a leading about the economic condition of his land for the next 14 years. Isn’t that mind blowing, to say the least? (Gen 41:1,25,28) This is much more than some “likely” people have ever received in terms of leading.

Nebuchadnezzar – We see another pagan king being led by God in this instance (Daniel 2:45)

“Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure”.

The question is, what did these people do to deserve God’s leading?

4. God spoke to the doubtful

Gideon: Gideon’s story is pretty interesting because he tested God’s leading at every turn. Yet, God was patient through it all (Judges 6:36,39,40). A human in God’s shoes would have been mad at him and his antics.

5. God spoke to the disobedient

Balaam: Balaam is coming up again. Even after God had instructed him not to curse the Israelites (as instructed by the King of Moab, Balak), Balaaam still disobeyed. It took a donkey talking to him to get him to do the right thing. God still spoke to him. You can read the entire story in Numbers 22.

If God can lead this calibre of people, how much more you?!!!! As much as you want to be led by God, never lose sight of the fact that He’s more than willing to lead you.

If God can lead sinners, doubtful and disobedient people in the bible, how much more you?!!!! As much as you want to be led by God, never lose sight of the fact that He's more than willing to lead you. Share on X

God is more willing to lead you than you are willing to be led. Think about that. Chew on it. Look at  your earthly parents. They didn’t wait till you were old enough to see that education was important. How much more, your heavenly father? He is always there. Present. Gently stirring you in the direction of His will for your life.
