People are everywhere and somehow they significantly contribute to our significance in life. You are where you are today because of the people who you’ve come across.
As hard as it sounds, not everyone is important, not everyone you think is important is actually important. You need to constantly check the people you hang around with and know when to drop them from your circles.
I can tell the worth of a person by taking an average of the people in his circles.
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn
People tend to perform to about the standards of the people they associate with. The people in your circle, how they live, what they like, and how much money they make, how impactful they are etc., greatly influences your attitudes and your actions.
It is critical and very important that you surround yourself with people you regard and aspire to be like and disassociate yourself from people who are not supporting your dreams in any way.
The truth is you cannot change the people around you, but you can change the people you choose to be around.
You have the choice and the power to lead yourself to your highest creative potential.
The type of people you choose to be around, influences
- The way you think
- The things you discuss
- The places you go
- The level of your productivity
In life you will meet two kinds of people. Ones who build you up, and ones who tear you down. But in the end, you will thank them both.
Identify your inner circle. Take out a sheet of paper now and write down the answers to the following questions
- Who are you?
- What kind of person do you want to be?
- What are the 5 people you spend the most time with and do they match who you want to become in the future?
- Where are the places you spend your time?
- Are there places you can meet people you admire and want to be like?
- What’s your business and career about?
- Can it enable you to inspire and associate with people you want to be like?
- What are your personal core values?
- Who are the top 5 people who represent the qualities you want? (Living or not, Young or old)
- How can you increase contact with them (HINT: Direct contact, Mentoring, Books, messages, etc.)
Why are people important? – The right people.
Some of you may say “I walk alone. I don’t have people I associate with?”
Yes, you may like walking alone, but you need the right people to walk with you through life. It’s safer, better and smarter when you walk through life with the right people.
There’s an old Zambian proverb that says, “When you run alone, you run fast. But when you run together, you run far.” Life itself is a marathon! The only way you’re going to finish the race well and not burn out is by having other people involved in your life through meaningful relationships.
You learn more by *walking with others than you do by yourself Proverbs 28:26 says, “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool.” Meaning if you are the only one that thinks and no one agrees with you, you may just be moving in the wrong direction. *Walking with is different from following.
You’ve got to have other people in your life to help you grow into the person God made you to be a person of significance. And in fact the people you choose to have around you will decide a lot about that.
So do you believe you are the average of people you spend most of your time with?
Have a great week.
God Bless you.
