Quitting your Job? 5 Tips to Know if it’s Time

Has your job become unbearable in recent times? Have you been thinking of quitting? It might be a hard thing to do. Yet, it could be the right thing to do in certain situations.

In this light, here are 5 tips to know if quitting is the way to go

1. When you’re underpaid
In a world like this and a place like Nigeria where everyone is trying to make ends meet, working in a place that doesn’t pay as much as you really need is a sign.
You could be in a different phase of your life with different responsibilities or even desires. If the pay for your current job is no longer sufficient enough, then quitting might be the best to do.

2. Undervalued. We shouldn’t work in a place where we’re not appreciated or not allowed to express ourselves as we want to. If you feel too restricted or stifled, or your job isn’t what you really want to do, then that could be a sign to look for better opportunities elsewhere.

3. If your job is causing you too much physical stress. Don’t work and use the money earned to start paying medical bills and treating conditions. Be aware of the stress you can handle and cannot handle. There’s hard work, but there’s also overworking yourself beyond capacity. Recognize the difference and move if you need to.

Ensure that your work doesn’t have a negative impact on other important parts of your life like health, family, church etc.

4. Toxic/disorderly/unprofessional work environment
The job isn’t just about function and tasks, it’s also about the people and structure.
If you see that a work environment is too toxic or disorderly for you, then it’s time to quit.

A place where there’s no standard of operations, no proper working model or job description, a place that promotes bullying and insulting of workers and all sorts of toxic traits is definitely a no no. A place where people are allowed to do certain kinds of things like physically abuse others, and get away with it without being reprimanded is definitely a no.

5. When you realise that you really want something else. Now this is important because the moment you no longer gain the satisfaction you ought to have from working or feel like you need to move on to something better, or more challenging or interesting to you or even another career path entirely, then I think it means you should quit and find fulfilment elsewhere.

I’d like to add that thinking about “the why” and “the what next” before quitting is very important.

Also, you may not quit immediately because you have bills to pay, or a family to feed. However, it’s a good idea to start mapping out what steps to take and prayerfully make decisions.

Note that how you choose to leave a particular workplace also matters.
