Single And Lonely? Here are things to do.

It is a misconception that being single automatically translates to being lonely.  This is because there are some people who are married and yet very lonely. Everyone regardless of their marital status has faced loneliness from time to time. It becomes an issue when it becomes regular and in fact, a way of living. This is what some call chronic loneliness.

Indeed, being single (not dating anyone) increases the tendency for you to slip into loneliness because you may often be alone, both physically and virtually. However, you can be single and not lonely. Sometimes, loneliness stems from a deep sense of isolation such that no matter the people around, you still feel alone.

In this case, you need to remind yourself that this is not how God designed for man to live. God created us to live in communities regardless of your marital status.

Are you single and feeling lonely? Here are a few things to do, a few tips to try:

– Get Busy

This works like magic. Idleness heightens loneliness regardless of your marital status.

If you are single and lonely, you can help yourself by learning new skills, getting busy with work etc. this way you maximize your time, mind and energy.

It generally just gives you less than to worry and mope over your singleness.

– Reach out.

When you feel lonely, reach out to others. Be a good friend, neighbor, colleague. Do not always wait for someone to initiate. Remember, he who wants friends must first prove himself friendly.

Thanks to technology, you can do this even without leaving the comfort of your home. This brings me to the next point…

– Go out some more.

Honestly, I don’t mean to sound like that aunt or uncle who is always ready with tips on how to get married by year end. But this can help a great deal especially if you don’t live with family or you live alone. Build healthy relationships and go out more. It may be to church or a support group or a give-back society. The more you interact with people, the more you are able to feel that human need for connection and community.

– Brighten your home.

Some spaces are just naturally depressing and little wonder spending time in it makes one lonely. It may be the color or even a re-arrangement. You need to figure out what your ‘happy atmosphere’ is and make your home one. Atmosphere and environment have a role to play in the mood of an individual, married or single

– Finally, learn to enjoy your own company.

Realistically, you cannot be around people 24/7 all year round. It is impractical. For some, the reason why they feel a void every time they are alone is because that void is meant to be filled by God. No matter, how many things you try to fill that void with, only God can truly satisfy.

So you may need to ask yourself if you have a relationship with God and settle that first. If you do have a working relationship with God, then maybe you need to learn what Dr. Myles Munroe of blessed memory would call ‘singleness’. This is the ability to function well and even thrive alone whether you are in or out of a relationship. So you may need to pause, learn more about yourself and practice enjoying your own company so when the right fellow comes, it is double fun and not a burden to the other fellow.
