Tips for Praying Long: 6 to Take Note of Today

The Bible is replete with instructions about prayer and fervency in prayer. It also covers consistency and duration in prayer (tips for praying long). We see Jesus pray for long hours in the Bible. Even the early disciples observed it as a culture.

Like me, I am sure many people have struggled with praying for long at some point. I have learnt a few tips that I’ll like to share.

But first of all, why should we pray for long? Why can’t we just say, “Plus Jesus, minus Satan. Amen!” and go about our other business?

Well, apart from the fact that praying long is a Biblical culture:

We have to pray for long because Jesus did. It’s that simple. If Jesus, God incarnate, God in man, God made flesh, prayed for long hours and did that often, why shouldn’t we?

Short prayers, although sometimes inevitable, have a tendency to be fraught with distractions. Long prayers, on the hand, tend to be more focus-effective.

Finally (although not conclusively), just like long conversations breeds intimacy between humans, long prayers breeds fellowship and intimacy with God.

That said, here are 6 helpful tips for praying long (in a day or praying for longer times at a stretch)

1. Learn about prayer

Not knowing what to pray for, or not knowing why you need to pray long is one of the reasons one could struggle with praying for long.

You can learn about prayer by listening to sermons on prayer and having specific Bible study on prayers. You can also refer to the reasons mentioned above.

2. Have a plan/structure

You cannot leave your prayer life to vibes. So have a structure put in place. One way to do that includes having people you’re praying for, things you plan to pray about, specific times of prayer etc.

You can pray about God’s work, specific things in your life, your future, the gospel, your church, and for people. Similarly, you can make a prayer list, you can also have times where you decide to just pray in the Spirit at a stretch.

Have a plan, and set your mind to it. Start small, and then grow big. This also includes setting a time and choosing a place.

3. Pray at intervals and with focus

Praying only when you feel like it shouldn’t be the times you pray. You should have specific times of prayer. Also, you shouldn’t always pray and multitask. Instead, take advantage of available moments, or small intervals to pray and stir up yourself.

4. Pray with people

Praying with people has its advantages, one of them is knowing that you have someone to pick you up when you are down or whenever you feel tired.

Like my pastor will say, we tend to pray longer and be more focused when we pray with people.

5. Take advantage of prayer platforms/companions

Set up prayer meetings for yourself, by yourself, and with others.

Also take advantage of songs that will stir you up, prayer tracks to encourage you, they go a long way to help you pray longer. An example is the Prayer Companion by Celebration church. You can also create a playlist or ask your friends for their prayer playlist.

6. Discipline yourself

No one can be persistent in prayer without discipline. Knowing why you should pray can help motivate discipline in prayer and push you to be fervent. Set your mind to it and pray whether or not you feel like it.
