Depression is a mood disorder that involves feelings of severe sadness and rejection that persist over time. It can come as a result of life events such as failure, bereavement or the loss of a job. So we need to be aware of ways to overcome depression.
At some point in our lives, we will experience depression or depressing moments as life is a series of ups and downs and there is no guarantee that things will always work in our favor. However, we must not allow anything to steal our joy.
In my journey to constant joy, I have learnt 4 ways to overcome depression:
1. Use your words
Depression is a feeling that often results from thoughts and there is no other way to fight negative thoughts than with our words. “Words” here refers to spoken statements to counteract negative thoughts.

2. Recognize and avoid triggers
The thoughts that lead us to depressing states are usually triggered by sights, actions, or events. Therefore, it is important we recognize those things that trigger moods of sadness and deal with them.

For someone, it might be vetting the people you follow on social media or reducing your time on social media. Whatever your trigger might be, avoid them.
3. Know who you are and whose you are
A healthy self esteem found in God will always breed joy. Seeing ourselves through Jesus’ eyes really helps. We are loved and there’s nothing that can change that. Also, as a child of God, joy is a fruit of our regenerated spirit, and we must always live in that consciousness.
4. Practice Gratitude and Thanksgiving
Contentment is an escort to the rhythm of joy. Sometimes, we unconsciously position ourselves to be depressed through unhealthy comparisons and being ungrateful. But when we sit and take inventory of our blessings, we will recognize the need to be joyful for the many blessings we have. So practice gratitude and thanksgiving as much as you can.

Everything mentioned here is so valid! I’ve seen them work for me over and over again.
Sometimes when I start feeling depressed, I track back my mood and feelings to the exact moment it started, and what triggered it. It always helps because I can now start addressing the issue.
