iren emmauelHi there, my name is Emmanuel Iren. In this article, I’d be addressing a frequently asked question: “What is my purpose in life?“. It is an audacious topic but I’d do my best to be as concise as I can be. Let’s get right to it now.

First let me say that there is a difference between your purpose in life and your assignment. What many people call ‘purpose’ is actually their assignment. There is a big difference between the two.

Being a Doctor for instance cannot be a person’s purpose. Purpose is that one thing that we must succeed at, and that which if we failed at nothing else we succeed at will count.

Here is a simple example- I once saw a bulb that could also make music. That’s creative, but I’d tell you what, if it makes all the music in the world, but for some reason can no longer give light, it can no longer be called a bulb. If it will be called a bulb, it MUST give light. Does being a doctor or lawyer pass this test? Will the creator be pleased if we were excellent in our chosen career even if we were terrible at loving our spouses, raising our children, caring for the poor, and most importantly, knowing and growing in Christ? Absolutely not.

God created Adam for a purpose, and put him in the garden of Eden. Was Adam’s purpose in life to be a gardener? No. That’s petty. Adam’s purpose was found in his personal ministry to God- worshipping him and ministering to him. But Adam’s purpose on earth gave rise to his assignment. His purpose is spiritual, but he has natural needs. He must survive, and to do so he must work. Purpose gives rise to assignment. Purpose is not assignment.

Scriptures on our purpose;

1. Rev 4:11 – Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

  • All things were created for the PLEASURE of God.

The next question here is, what is God’s pleasurable will for man?

The bible says that God chose us in Jesus Christ hath before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, ACCORDING TO THE GOOD PLEASURE OF HIS WILL. (Ephesians 1:4-5)

This tells you that what matters the most to God is that we have faith in His son Jesus Christ, becoming like him and helping others become like him.

2. Rom 8:29 -For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

From scriptures, God appears to be indifferent about what work we do. All He is particular about is that we aren’t lazy (1 Thess 4:11-12), we are able to fend for our families (1 Tim 5:8), we remember the poor (1 Tim 6:16-17), and we give to the spread of the gospel (2 Cor 9:1-8).

A person who is asking God to show him what work to do may be irresponsible. “In all labour, there is profit…” – Proverbs 14:23. See your career as a springboard for purpose. It is your duty to be as effective career wise so that you can succeed at your true purpose in life.

Finally, consider that at the judgment seat of Christ, you are not going to be asked how much money you made or even what career you chose. Faith in Jesus will be the question of the day.

Hope this helped you? The link below sheds more light about your purpose;

God bless you
